The Wigwam Resort in Arizona is awash with the glow of Christmas cheer. From the entrance to the charming adobe style cottages, lights are twinkling and paths are adorned with seasonal décor of deer, bows and candy canes. Old Saint Nick should feel right at home, as do all guests by the warm fireplaces. The Wigwam is one of the leading Historical Hotels in America and has the only 54-hole golf resort in Arizona.
It boasts two Robert Trent Jones Sr. designs, the Gold and the Patriot. Robert “Red” Lawrence designed the Heritage course. The Gold is a parkland style course that looks innocuous but canals, trees and strategically placed bunkers can take a bite out of any scorecard. The Gold Course hosts the Patriot All American Invitational. In its 6th year, the bowl-like championship for top collegiate golfers from around the U.S honors fallen heroes as each golfer carries a golf bag with the fallen soldier’s name inscribed. The opening ceremony (on December 29th in 2017) will be a sight to behold. Bring a tissue as the flyover salute and words of welcome and remembrance are unforgettable. At the conclusion of the tournament, each bag is auctioned off and the proceeds go to Folds of Honor, which gives scholarships to kids whose parents have made the ultimate sacrifice serving our country.
Any day might be prime time to see flyovers of F35s at the Wigwam and nearby courses given the proximity of Luke Air Force Base. Estrella Golf Club, formerly Estrella Mountain Ranch is a Nicklaus design within a planned community that includes a lake and marina. At Verrado the Founder’s Course, formerly named Raven Verrado has been a local favorite since 2004 and the brand new Victory Course by Tom Lehman has a striking finishing hole with elevated tee boxes overlooking a lake and into the White Tank Mountains. These are just a few great layouts to play while staying at the Wigwam on the west side of Phoenix where roadrunners, rabbits and coyotes cross paths.
Also close to the Wigwam, The University of Phoenix Stadium delivers Cardinals games and concerts while the Arena next door hosts NHL hockey. Cabella’s, boutiques and outlet shopping are nearby.
Hike or bike the White Tank Mountains or retreat to the Wigwam’s Red Door Spa, which has all the world-class amenities. A private outdoor lap pool with sumptuous lounge chairs and wet and dry saunas for relaxation complement therapeutic skin care, reflexology and massage treatments.
The Wigwam Resort is annually voted one of the best for family getaways. The accommodations, golf, restaurants and Executive Chef Kirsten Seltzer deserve a salute for making vacation wishes come true.
