For a “Different Point of View”, head to the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort and Spa where the elegant restaurant at the top of the hill is so named but where the golf course also reflects the meaning at every turn. The Valley of the Sun is surrounded by mountain ranges, none more prevalent than the North Phoenix Mountain Preserve where the Troon–managed Lookout Mountain Golf Club is annually ranked as one of the top golf courses in the Phoenix area. The stellar views and layout of this 4 Star rated course by Golf Digest are enjoyed by international visitors and serve as a go to course for locals. Hence a round will invoke memories of playing with folks through the years, some sadly long gone, like “Too tall” who invited Danny to play in the Major League Baseball Alumni Tourney. Years ago, Alice caddied for the Hilton pro and VPs when they played in the LPGA pro Am with Harvey Mackey and many rounds were shared with the ladies of the Fair Play league she sponsored through AT&T. The course has some advantageous front tees; especially on par 5s that are short enough for birdies. Don’t miss stopping at the back tees though for again, a Different Point of View.
Billy Johnson and Forrest Richardson designed 18 fabulous holes to interplay with cliff side elevations providing dramatic panoramas of the surrounding area. Natural desert landscape frames the fairways. The course is routed within a housing community without detracting from the openness of the Mountain Preserve. Saguaro and cacti intermingle with tall eucalyptus trees, man-made lakes, transitional arroyos and desert washes. Holes are given western names like Six-shooter but you hope not, since that’s a par 3. Number 7 is the actual “Lookout.” It’s a double entendre – lookout at the view but lookout for the narrow neck between the wasteland crossing much of the fairway. Play it wise like the owl logo and a birdie is yours. The number 8 tee box has a varied menu posted to call ahead for pick up at the Owl’s Nest after 9. Perhaps the favorite tee is number 10, Picturesque Point for the steepness to the fairway and surrounding luxury homes. It was number 12 where twelve years ago Danny hit his longest drive from tip to green for an eagle that contributed to the win of the Baseball trophy and a watch for Alice’s wrist. Lookout Mountain Golf Club is truly a unique golf experience for making indelible memories.
As with all Troon-managed courses, you will find the utmost professionalism from the staff, cart service and attendants with water hydration included along the way. You will find both in the amenities of the resort and golf course. Director JC Wright comes from stints at Southern Dunes (twice) and Wekopa, no stranger to servicing desert golfers. The Hilton Golf Academy provides expert instruction in all facets of your game before hitting the links. Hilton and Troon are synonymous with outstanding service and quality. Lookout Mountain is well maintained while dedicated to preserving the sanctuary of the environment with protection of the wild life habitat that lives within the confines and beyond. In fact it has achieved designation as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses.
For those tired muscles after the round, seek your own sanctuary at the Tocaloma Spa and Salon. Tocaloma brings the outside in with its rejuvenating treatments that incorporate indigenous herbs and rituals. Slip into your robe, then the courtyard for a green smoothie that is as healthy as it is tasty. It’s a calm corner to meet your therapist. While the spa itself lacks enhanced water feature amenities, the pool and golf locker rooms are available to use with treatments. The hot stone massage with various herbal scents of the day is a great choice. Bad round? Forget about it! This is a Different Point in Tyme – oh wait, that is another restaurant on property, connected to the golf pro shop and it connects golfers with special discounts on excellent food and beverages. Just show your scorecard to qualify. Don’t worry, you don’t have to share the actual score or maybe you will want to brag, even buy a round for that hole in one? It doesn’t matter, if you scored a round at Lookout Mountain, you scored well and will be happy!!!
