In 2007 The PGA Tour held their first tour stop outside the US & Canada. It is still their only event outside of US & Canada and it is held in Playa del Carmen, Mexico at Mayakoba. Now Part of the Fall Series of PGA Tour tournaments, the OHL Classic at Mayakoba this year will take place November 9th – 12th . The Riviera Maya region of Mexico is as beautiful as it sounds with its white sandy beaches lapped by turquoise waves and warm gulf breezes. The area known as the Riviera Maya stretches along the Eastern coast of Mexico, starting in Cancun and extending south through Playa del Carmen almost all the way to the popular ruins of Tulum. If you love golf, then this region of Mexico should be on your must play bucket list.
A Greg Norman design, El Camaleón Golf Club at Mayakoba boasts a spectacular layout winding about the tropical jungle and the mangrove before boldly stretching to the sea. Well reputed among golf’s finest players, El Camaleón is the PGA TOUR site for the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. Here, golf enthusiasts of all skill levels can experience the essence of a pristine and natural landscape, recognized by the Audubon Society. Like the chameleon from which it takes its name, the course offers up ever-changing challenges and alluring vistas: fairways lined with sand dunes and mangroves, distinctive hazards such as cenotes (subterranean caves), crystal-clear lagoons, and greens perched on the edge of the Caribbean Sea. At 7,024 yards, PAR 72, Camaleón offers a day filled with exhilarating play.
Bring out your camera for the signature hole of El Camaleon! A par 3 of 128 yards and running alongside the Caribbean, the strong ocean breeze will play an important part in your club selection, it was an extra 2 clubs for me. Enjoy the sweeping views of Cozumel and the world’s second-largest coral reef, this tricky green sits right to left on a natural dune ridge and is guarded by a single bunker to the front left of the green. Mayakoba is a must play for your next trip to Playa! Visit www.mayakobagolf.com to book your tee time and stay today!
There are a number of great course designs by Nicklaus, Leman, Trent Jones, Norman and Pete Dye to choose from in the region but few offer the spectacular scenery of Grand Coral in the city of Playa del Carmen. In 2011, when Nick Price finished Grand Coral Riviera Maya, it immediately became the standard in the region for a golf course design that satisfied the needs of the area’s growing population, while whenever possible, protecting native vegetation and minimizing the need for excess water consumption. The vision of course designer Nick Price was to create a golf course that naturally adjusted and was sensitive to the beauty of the already existing environment.
Can You Say Amenities!! This 18-hole course par 71 with 6,990 yards is the first legacy of Nick Price in Mexico. Grand Corals modern clubhouse and most exclusive beach club are only a few of the options that will make you feel worthy. The locker room provides a gym, Jacuzzi, dry sauna, and outdoor pool to finish your day.
The Course from the tips is a very formidable challenge for good players stretching out over 7000 yard with lots of water and very little rough. With 5 sets of Tees, Price has set the course up for every level of player so choosing the right tee box for your ability is important. If you are not sure, ask the friendly staff for assistance here. The greens at Grand Coral are very consistent. They rolled true with good lines and predictable break lines. The tee boxes at Grand Coral were great, they have lots of grass, and nice big markers on them so you can pick out a yardage and target in the distance and swing out to it. It’s nice to know that if you are standing on a 400-yard hole and you can see the 200 yard and 150 yard markers. The fairways are expansive and conditions were excellent from tee to green. There are more traps at Grand Coral then many other courses in the region, which created a much more interesting design. Price strategically placed the traps in risk/reward locations, but not overbearing by any means. On many holes there are crowned greens, which is a signature style of Nick Price, he likes to keep you focused.
One of the great things about the facility is they allows wives or girlfriends to ride along as non-players to enjoy time together. This is a plus/ plus for couples. Overall, it was a great experience at Grand Coral Riviera Maya. Pace of play was great, course was in good condition, and the facility is fantastic.
