The grandeur of the Sierra Mountains in the Reno/Tahoe region is sensational. The Reno area is filled with river front entertainment from major league baseball (Triple A farm team, the Aces) to casinos and resorts. The backdrop for all is snow covered peaks even late into the season or sometimes all year. The air is fresh, and the city is vibrant with activity.
The Somersett Golf and Country Club has a Tom Kite design, his first outside of Texas. Situated on the northwest slopes of Reno, he takes the game to new heights. Elevation elation is common with intoxicating panoramic views of the mountains, streams, lakes and beautiful homes. Stuart Smith, the Director of Golf and Sr. PGA Champ contender says it is good to be home in Somersett. Golf is year-round, weather permitting, and the course is one tough but really fun track to negotiate. The open-air veranda of the new clubhouse has the views and ambience one would dream of in a chic modern mountain setting. The indoor complex for practice will be opening soon. An emphasis on family pays off in their award winning junior program. While the club is private, residents of Somersett have access to the clubhouse and the driving range. Pro to pro arrangements can also be made to check it out. Sommersett Golf and Country Club is just minutes from downtown Reno where there is always a festival going on.
At a reception in the Silverado Resort Casino, we ran into Mark Conn, formerly with the Wigwam Resort of Arizona, now the Business Director of Golf Services with El Dorado, Silverado and Circus Circus, all on the strip, providing experiences for the hip or the happy patrons. Stay and play packages for golf are some of the best you can book.
We stayed at the Peppermill Resort Casino down the street which almost looks like it is trying too hard to appear like the Bellagio in Vegas, but it really works. The rooms in the Tuscany Wing are spacious and elaborate. Too bad we were only there to change clothes and sleep. When we take a return mulligan we’ll make time to enjoy the seductive pool area, including warm springs. The Reno airport is exceptionally fast, efficient and has a fun “escape lounge,” upholding the theme of “Really Fun Reno.”
