As the final week’s PGA TOUR Champions played out at the beautiful Phoenix Country Club, Jerry Kelly made a side trip to Tucson. Beside the 18th green of the Catalina Course at Omni Resorts Tucson National the well-suited Conquistadores gathered with Jerry, PGA officials and Exact Science executives to announce the sponsorship of the Cologuard Classic. This will be one of the first Champions tournaments of the new season, scheduled earlier (2/26-3/4/18) than previous years in order to kick off Colon Cancer Awareness Month in March.
The search for a sponsor has been arduous and so Conquistador president Jose Rincon shared that he was “giddy” about the contract that will extend for at least the next three years. He said, “This is not just a title sponsor but the right title sponsor.” What makes it so right is that the Champions are PGA pros who have turned 50, the same milestone when colon cancer tests are recommended for both men and women.
Several notables will join the over 50 ranks during these sponsorship years including Darren Clarke and Chris Dimarco in ’18, Angel Cabrera, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen in ’19 and Jim Furyk, Mike Weir, KJ Choi and Phil Mickelson in ’20. 2017 welcomed Jose Maria Olazabal, David Toms, Steve Stricker, Steve Flesch and Jerry Kelly who hails from Wisconsin, home of Exact Sciences, owner of Cologuard, hence the ideal partnership.
Considering that Cologuard is a noninvasive screening test for the 2nd leading cancer killer, who wouldn’t want to lead their color guard and help promote the eradication of a curable cancer?
Jerry who just won the Champions tournament at Bear Mountain is elated that the event is being held at the Omni and that this year he can stay on property. Before it was “above my pay grade.” Indeed, the Omni Resorts Tucson National is a treat for all guests. Rooms overlook the two courses and Santa Catalina Mountains for a serene stay with ultimate service and amenities. Lounge by the pool, immerse in the spa, hike or golf. It is a sunny winter getaway for all and the reason that so many of the pro wives join their husbands on this tour stop.
