The Jewel of the Florida Panhandle
When Spanish, French and English explorers journeyed into the Choctawhatchee Bay circa 1700’s, they might have been looking for gold, but found emeralds. The Emerald Coast is the jewel of the Florida Panhandle and has one of the largest concentrations of golf courses from Destin and Ft. Walton Beach to Okaloosa Island.
Majestic, challenging, picturesque, and legendary are some of the superlatives used to describe what Good Morning America calls,” Top 10 Most Beautiful Places in America.”
Golf Courses in Choctawhatchee Bay
Blessed with superb weather and an incredible canvas backdrop of Choctawhatchee Bay, the top designers of golf showcase an array of masterpieces.
- Regatta Bay Golf and Yacht Club is punctuated with contrasts of rolling terrain and woods versus wetlands. The only Audubon registered course in the area, the beauty of its surroundings are equaled by its challenge of navigational know-how.
- The Fred Couples designed Kelly Plantation Golf Course is a visual spectacle in itself and quite difficult, especially from the tips. The course offers water views of Choctawhatchee Bay amidst Magnolia and Palmetto trees.
- The Finger/Dye courses at the acclaimed Shalimar Pointe Golf and CC are a mixture of beauty and the beast. The shimmering white sand dunes are a stark contrast to the deep woods of pines, palmettos and magnolias. The focus was on aesthetics as well as functionality of design.
- Eglin Air Force base is home to two courses, the Eagle and the Falcon. It was once known as “Chicago Golf Club” by the mafia that made it their home. The course dates back to the roaring 20’s of the Capone era. It is now one of the best in the Air Force arsenal of golf courses. An Eagle landing will be better achieved with this very playable design. It might be easier to land an F-18 on the runway than the Falcon course. It is much more difficult to maneuver and suited to the seasoned player.
